If you are binge-watching this drama in Netflix, you probably wait for Han Jipyeong love confession scene so badly. He said “좋아합니다” (johahamnida) to Seo Dalmi while mixing the noodles, LOL. The meaning is obvious: I LIKE YOU. It derives from 좋아하다 (johahada) that means to like something or someone. -ㅂ니다 is verb particle to form formal and polite sentence. Meanwhile, you can say “좋아해요” (johahaeyo) for casual yet polite way or “좋아해” (johahae) for banmal form. Here, Han Jipyeong speaks formally with Seo Dalmi considering their professional relation as CEO and mentor. Besides, they are not personally close yet and address each other with title: (서 대표님) Seo Daepyonim and Han Timjangnim (한 팀장님).

Playing a rich man role as Jin Kyu in this romantic comedy drama, he got some hilarious scenes. One memorable one is 소개팅 (sogaeting) or blind date scene in restaurant. He tried to get to know each other but was ignored by the girl. Jin Kyu asked “취미가 뭐에요?” (chwimiga mwoeyo) or “what’s your hobby?”. 취미 (Chwimi) means hobby or interest while -가 (-ga) is subject particle. 뭐 (Mwo) is Korean interrogative word for “what”. We have learnt about Korean interrogative topic in the previous section. We add suffix -에요 (-eyo) to indicate casual and polite sentence. In this occasion, Jin Kyu may use casual sentence since they are not personally closer each other but they still have to speak politely.

Did you notice that Kim Seon Ho also played a role in this “sageuk” or historical drama starring DO EXO? He is definitely second-lead specialist who loves the first female lead. Jong Jae Yoon is a young and humble judge who falls for Yeon Hong Shim (Nam Ji Hyun). Let’s pick one quote which show his feeling for her: “보고싶었어, 그대 얼굴이” (bogosipeosseo, geudae eolguri). 보고싶었어 (Bogosipeosseo) means “missed” in English and indicates the past tense. So we can translate it to “I missed you”. 그대 (Geudae) can be used as subject pronoun for “you” and possessive determiner/ pronoun for “your/ yours”. In this context, it refers to possessive determiner since it is followed by noun “얼굴이” (eolguri) that means “face”. So, the suitable meaning of this sentence is “I missed your face”.

4. Sincerity in Start Up

Although Han Jipyeong is typically sharp-tongued person, he is actually a sincere and innocent one. That’s why grandma calls him “good boy”. He never forgets about grandma’s kindness and is willing to pay her back someday. We can see it when he says “돈으로 갚을 수나 있었으면 좋겠네” (doneuro gapeul suna isseosseumyeon johkettne). 돈 (Don) means money followed by direction particle -으로 (-euro) to explain the tool, method, or way you do something. In this context, we can translate to “with money”. 갚을 (Gapeul) derives from 갚다 (gapda) that means repay or pay back added by object particle -을 (-eul). We use 수 있었으면 (Su isseosseumyeon) to express conditional sentence or wish that something could be different. We can say “if only I could” or “I wish I could”. Remember, particle (으)면 is used to express conditions or assumptions and connector for two clauses in one sentence. The first clause is the condition of the following clause. 좋겠네 (Johkettne) is past future form of 좋다 (johda) that means nice, fine, or good. So, the point of this sentence is “If only I could pay back with money, that would be good”.

It is when Kim Seon Ho was invited to Amazing Saturday, a Korean reality show. He said “안돼” (andwae). This term is used to express an objection, denying, or opposition. It basically forms a negative statement and has various meanings depending on its context in a sentence. It could mean “no way”, “no”, or “do not”. You can use it when you disbelieve to something, feel shocked, become afraid of something, or desperately have no idea. Of course, it is banmal form. You can say “안돼요” (andwaeyo) for casual yet polite way.
