We begin with suicide attempt scene conversation. Suho tries to rescue Jukyung. Suho thinks that Jukyung attempted to suicide by jumping from the rooftop. Jukyung and Suho fall. Suho says 다행이다 (dahaengida) as suicide attempt failed. 다행이다 (dahaengida) means “what a relief” or “thank’s God” in English. It is an expression of mercy or thankful for good things or fortune. You could also use 다행이다 (dahaengida) if the bad things don’t come.

Jukyung finds something inside Suho’s mind after his rescue. Probably something happened in Suho’s past. Before leaving, Jukyung says 힘내세요 (himnaeseyo) to Suho. It is an expression to cheer someone up. You can say it to comfort someone when he/she feels blue or has a hard time. But, why does Jukyung speak formally to Suho? Well, she lost her glasses and doesn’t clearly recognize him as a teenager. She thinks Suho is ‘ahjussi’ (old man). In Korea, you have to use formal or polite sentence to speak with older people. If you want to cheer your friends up, you may say 힘내 (himnae) only.

3. Bewitched by Suho’s Visual

This is Jukyung’s first day at new high school. She is in the same class with Suho. However, both doesn’t recognize each other firstly. When Jukyung sees Suho, she is bewitched by his visual. She unconsciously murmurs 완전 잘생겼다 (wanjeon jal saenggyeotda) while gazing at Suho. 완전 (Wanjeon) means definitely, absolutely, or really. It emphasizes the following term. 잘생겼다 (Jal saenggyeotda) is used to describe someone who is handsome or good looking. So, 완전 잘생겼다 (wanjeon jal saenggyeotda) means “absolutely handsome”. You may use this expression when you adore or compliment someone. In other words, you could say 멋있다 (meositda) to describe cool guy.

4. Misunderstanding

Jukyung seems to worry since she has met Suho with the bare face. She thinks Suho knows her big secret: true face. So she acts nicely to Suho at school. However, Suho feels that this is weird. He asks 아님 나 좋아해? (Anim na johahae). 아님 (Anim) is actually shortened from 아니면 (animyeon) which means or and either. It is used to express option or sometimes possibility between two things or more. 나 (Na) is object pronoun for “me”. 좋아해 (Johahae) is banmal form of 좋아하다 (johahada) that means “to like”. The meaning is simply “or….do you like me?”. Grammatically, this is not a complete sentence. In banmal or informal conversation, it is common to eliminate some particles and subject without changing the meaning. The complete sentence based on grammar is 아니면 너는 나를 좋아해? (Animyeon neoneun nareul johahae?)

5. Learn Korean Greeting with True Beauty Cast

True Beauty is kind of daily life drama so it’s quite easy to learn daily conversation from its cast dialogue. Let’s put an example with popular Korean greeting 생일 축하해 (saengil chukhahae). The meaning is obvious: happy birthday. It is a banmal or informal greeting. You may say it to congratulate your friends. Jukyung (Moon Ga Young) is not really close to Suho (Cha Eun Woo) but they are in the same age. So, it is fine if Jukyung speaks informally to Suho. If you want to congratulate someone older or in the higher position, you should speaks formally by saying 생일 축하합니다 (saengil chukhahamnida).
