Suho says ๋‹คํ–‰์ด๋‹ค (dahaengida) as suicide attempt failed. ๋‹คํ–‰์ด๋‹ค (dahaengida) means โ€œwhat a reliefโ€ or โ€œthankโ€™s Godโ€ in English. It is an expression of mercy or thankful for good things or fortune. You could also use ๋‹คํ–‰์ด๋‹ค (dahaengida) if the bad things donโ€™t come.

Jukyung finds something inside Suhoโ€™s mind after his rescue. Probably something happened in Suhoโ€™s past. Before leaving, Jukyung says ํž˜๋‚ด์„ธ์š” (himnaeseyo) to Suho. It is an expression to cheer someone up. You can say it to comfort someone when he/she feels blue or has a hard time. But, why does Jukyung speak formally to Suho? Well, she lost her glasses and doesnโ€™t clearly recognize him as a teenager. She thinks Suho is โ€˜ahjussiโ€™ (old man). In Korea, you have to use formal or polite sentence to speak with older people. If you want to cheer your friends up, you may say ํž˜๋‚ด (himnae) only.

This is Jukyungโ€™s first day at new high school. She is in the same class with Suho. However, both doesnโ€™t recognize each other firstly. When Jukyung sees Suho, she is bewitched by his visual. She unconsciously murmurs ์™„์ „ ์ž˜์ƒ๊ฒผ๋‹ค (wanjeon jal saenggyeotda) while gazing at Suho. ์™„์ „ (Wanjeon) means definitely, absolutely, or really. It emphasizes the following term. ์ž˜์ƒ๊ฒผ๋‹ค (Jal saenggyeotda) is used to describe someone who is handsome or good looking. So, ์™„์ „ ์ž˜์ƒ๊ฒผ๋‹ค (wanjeon jal saenggyeotda) means โ€œabsolutely handsomeโ€. You may use this expression when you adore or compliment someone. In other words, you could say ๋ฉ‹์žˆ๋‹ค (meositda) to describe cool guy.

4. Misunderstanding

Jukyung seems to worry since she has met Suho with the bare face. She thinks Suho knows her big secret: true face. So she acts nicely to Suho at school. However, Suho feels that this is weird. He asks ์•„๋‹˜ ๋‚˜ ์ข‹์•„ํ•ด? (Anim na johahae). ์•„๋‹˜ (Anim) is actually shortened from ์•„๋‹ˆ๋ฉด (animyeon) which means or and either. It is used to express option or sometimes possibility between two things or more. ๋‚˜ (Na) is object pronoun for โ€œmeโ€. ์ข‹์•„ํ•ด (Johahae) is banmal form of ์ข‹์•„ํ•˜๋‹ค (johahada) that means โ€œto likeโ€. The meaning is simply โ€œorโ€ฆ.do you like me?โ€. Grammatically, this is not a complete sentence. In banmal or informal conversation, it is common to eliminate some particles and subject without changing the meaning. The complete sentence based on grammar is ์•„๋‹ˆ๋ฉด ๋„ˆ๋Š” ๋‚˜๋ฅผ ์ข‹์•„ํ•ด? (Animyeon neoneun nareul johahae?)

Letโ€™s put an example with popular Korean greeting ์ƒ์ผ ์ถ•ํ•˜ํ•ด (saengil chukhahae). The meaning is obvious: happy birthday. It is a banmal or informal greeting. You may say it to congratulate your friends. Jukyung (Moon Ga Young) is not really close to Suho (Cha Eun Woo) but they are in the same age. So, it is fine if Jukyung speaks informally to Suho.
